Chinese and Peruvian Americans, Chen and Chavez are two female artists who have been working parallel to one another for almost a decade but have never intersected their work until this year. They are embarking on their first collaboration, joining together their ideas of sound, performance and the depth of their respective experiences. Friction and touch amplified by the body to mouth, strings to wood and the needle to speakers.

Seth Cluett will present a live set using sung and electronically generated sine tones, room acoustic phenomena, and amplified objects exploring the boundary between personal and communal listening. Constructing a focused, attentive perceptual space and an elastic, malleable experience of duration, the sound world of this work is tensely suspended between full body immersion and brittle, sparse timelessness.
Richard Garet will play a spatial improvisation with guitar amp/s, multi-channel PA, audiocassettes and modified playback machines +?.

AUDREY CHEN is a Chinese-American musician who was born into a family of material scientists, doctors and engineers, outside of Chicago in 1976. Parting ways with the family convention, she turned to the cello at age 8 and voice at 11. After years of classical and conservatory training in both instruments, with a resulting specialization in early and new music, she parted ways again in 2003 to begin new negotiations with sound in order to discover a more individually honest aesthetic.
Now, using the cello, voice and analog electronics, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of a homemade analog synthesizer, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language.
Among musicians, she has worked with Phil Minton, John Bock, Tetuzi Akiyama, Toshimaru Nakamura, Ko Ishikawa, Tomomi Adachi, Matana Roberts, Elliott Sharp, Aki Onda, Phill Niblock, Frederic Blondy, Jerome Noetinger, C. Spencer Yeh, Nate Wooley, Mats Gustafsson, Mazen Kerbaj, Michael Zerang, Tatsuya Nakatani, Le Quan Ninh, Joe Mcphee, Susan Alcorn, Michele Doneda, Paolo Angeli, Dylan Nyoukis, Id M Theft Able, plus many more.
Chen has performed across Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Canada and the USA. In 2011, in addition to her performances, she was awarded the prestigious Mary Sawyers Baker Prize, an award that was established to support individual artists living, and working in Maryland. Since 2011, she relocated to Berlin, Germany from Baltimore, MD USA and continues to maintain an active international touring schedule.

MARIA CHAVEZ

Born in Lima, Peru, Maria Chavez is mainly recognized in the art community as an improviser, sound artist and curator.
Her sound installations, visual objects and live turntable performances focus on the values of accidents and it’s unique, complicated possibilities with sound emitting machinery like the turntable.
Influenced by improvisation in contemporary art, her work expands outside of the sound world straddling different disciplines of interest. In 2012, Chavez wrote and illustrated her first book object entitled, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable. This book is considered the first sound related release by Chavez since her solo album release on Pitchphase in 2004.
Chavez also works as an independent sound art curator in NYC, collaborating with various organizations and art spaces, helping to produce events and festivals that present the latest of what is being shown in the sound art world. Being an independent curator helps to expand Maria’s artistic research when developing new projects for her own practice.
She was awarded the Jerome Foundation’s Emerging Artist Grant by New York’s Roulette Intermedium in 2008, and in 2009 she became a recipient of the Van Lier Fellowship by The Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust. Maria was an artist in residence with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, the Clocktower and the DIA:Beacon Museum. She has worked with Christian Marclay and the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC as part of Christian Marclay: FESTIVAL and has shared the stage with renowned artists such as: Pauline Oliveros; Thurston Moore; Lydia Lunch; Phill Niblock and Otomo Yoshihide.
Currently, Chavez has been awarded the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble commission to present a new sound piece in 2015 at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She has recently returned from a 3 month solo European tour, presenting her work in different museums, arts spaces and performance venues in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Austria and the U.K.

RICHARD GARET holds an MFA from Bard College. SETH CLUETT (b. Troy, NY) is an artist, composer, and performer whose work ranges from photography and drawing to video, concert music, and critical writing. His “subtle…seductive, immersive” (Artforum) sound work has been characterized as “rigorously focused and full of detail” (e/i) and “dramatic, powerful, and at one with nature” (The Wire). The recipient of grants from Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Fund and Meet the Composer, Cluett has published articles for BYPASS, Shifter, Intransitive, The Open Space Magazine, Leonardo Music Journal, 306090, Earshot, and the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. His work has been presented at venues such as MassMoCA, The Kitchen, GRM, Palais de Tokyo, STEIM, and Dundee Contemporary Arts and is documented on the Line Imprint, Radical Matters, Sedimental, Notice, and Winds Measure recordings. In the fall of 2012, Cluett joined the faculty of Contemporary Arts at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
